Limit Switches

A limit switch is an electro-mechanical device used to send an electrical signal based on physical interaction.

Limit switches are used to automatically detect or sense the presence of an object or monitor and indicate whether the movement limits of that object have been exceeded.

As implied by their name, the original use for limit switches was to define the limit or endpoint over which an object could travel before being stopped. It was at this point that the button was engaged to control the limit of travel.

Limit switches are used to indicate when a control valve has reached a specific position. They are often used to reveal the fully open or fully closed position but can be set at intermediate points if desired.

A limit switch may be used for something as simple as turning a control panel indicator light on when the valve has fully opened or closed. Or, the controller can be wired into a sophisticated safety system.

Limit switches are almost always electrical devices. Most use a mechanical connection to the valve or actuator stem to ensure accurate position triggering.

Some use non-contacting electromagnetic triggering systems to activate internal contacts, but lever- and cam-actuating systems are more common.

At either end of the spectrum, the limit switch provides a contact closure or opening at the position indicated.

Product Description

Limit switches are suitable for automating on/off applications and issuing an electric binary signal when the valve travel exceeds or falls below an adjusted limit. The call can be used, for example, for switching control signals, issuing visual and audible alarms, or for connection to central control or alarm systems.

The installed limit contacts are either inductive, electric, pneumatic, or software-based, depending on the device version. The contacts can be used either as ordinarily open contacts or normally closed contacts, which can be overridden for the most part. Good Supplier limit switches can contain up to three limit contacts depending on the limit switch version.

Safety is an essential aspect when there are humans and machines involved. A limit switch can be used to detect the opening of a safety guard that stops and de-energizes the machine. If the guard is opened during operation, the machine stops.

If the guard is opened while the engine is stopped, the limit switch prevents the machine from starting. In both cases, the limit switch is used to safeguard the operator from potential harm.

A limit switch can be used to protect machinery from unintentional damage. This includes components that are part of changeovers (end of arm tools), elements that may wear out over time (motor clutch), and components that may damage others if they fail (gears, shafts, etc.).

Product Feature

Limit switches offer several advantages intrinsic to their design:

⦿ The designs are generally straightforward

⦿ They work well in almost any industrial setting

⦿ They exhibit high accuracy and repeatability

⦿ They are low power consumption devices

⦿ They can switch high-inductance loads

⦿ They can be used to exchange multiple loads

⦿ They are simple to install

⦿ They are rugged and reliable
Emergency Shutdown Valves are a fundamental part of the safety systems associated with oil and gas, utility, and other hazardous processes. As the name suggests, these valves are not intended for controlling the process itself but rather for protection. The valves are of fail to closed nature to contain the liquid inventory.
