Pneumatic Actuated Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves are widespread among diverse industries and applications such as pharmaceutical, chemical, and oil, food, water supply, wastewater treatment, fire protection, gas supply, fuel handling.

These valves are available in very large sizes and are suitable for handling slurries, and liquids with relatively large amounts of solids at low pressures.

But what are some of the advantages, features, and benefits of these pneumatic actuated butterfly valves?

Butterfly valves are similar to ball valves but have several advantages. They are small and, when actuated pneumatically, open and close very quickly.

The disc is lighter than a ball, and the valve requires less structural support than a ball valve of comparable diameter.

Butterfly valves are very precise, which makes them advantageous in industrial applications. They are quite reliable and require very little maintenance.
Butterfly valves have a relatively uncomplicated design, meaning they have fewer moving parts and fewer pockets/traps for media resulting in easier repairs and cheaper maintenance costs.

Due to the large variety of materials, the butterfly valve is universally compatible, for example with countless industrial applications, water/drinking water treatment, coastal and offshore sectors.

The butterfly valve is also often a cost- effective alternative to other valve types, where there are no stringent requirements regarding switching cycles, hygiene, or control accuracy.

Features & Benefits

⦿ Butterfly valves are lightweight, so it only takes less space than globe or gate valves;

⦿ Butterfly valves can be opened or closed quickly;

⦿ Tight shut-off and lower steam leakage;

⦿ Smooth flow is possible because there is only little resistance to flow;

⦿ Suitable for automated operation with a low operating torque;

⦿ These valves are easy to maintain because of a few parts;

⦿ These valves are also available in very large size;

⦿ Pressure drop is low and pressure recovery is high;

⦿ Satisfactory throttling characteristic over most of the range;

⦿ It can be used for slurries because it can clean itself;

⦿ Suitable for large valve applications;

⦿ It can be used with chemical or corrosive media
Large high-temperature butterfly valves are manufactured by steel plate welding and are mainly used for flue ducts and gas pipes of high-temperature media.

Butterfly valves play an important role in pipelines by helping in controlling the water flow. They can stop or start any flow of fluid or varying that is throttling the amount of flow. Some valves function better in corrosive systems, while others can manage high- pressure fluids.

Butterfly valves are among the family of quarter- turn valves and work very similar to ball valves. The “butterfly” is a disk connected to a rod. It closes when the rod rotates the disc by a quarter turn to a position perpendicular to the flow direction. When the valve opens, the disk is rotated back to allow the flow.
The lug-style butterfly valve has threaded inserts or lugs outside the valve body. Two sets of bolts connect pipe flanges to each side of the bolt inserts without nuts.

This design enables the disconnection of one side without affecting the other for dead-end service. Lug- style butterfly valves used in dead-end service generally have a lower pressure rating. The lug-style butterfly valves, unlike the wafer-style, carry the weight of the piping through the valve body.

A wafer-style butterfly valve is the most economical version and it is sandwiched between two pipe flanges. This valve may or may not have flange holes outside of the valve body. The pipe flanges are connected through long bolts that cross the entire valve body.

The sealing between the valve and pipe flanges is accomplished via gaskets, O-rings, and flat valve faces on both sides of the valve. This type of connection is designed for sealing against bi-directional differential pressures and to prevent backflow in systems designed for universal flow.

Because the pneumatic butterfly valve is a circular disc rotating with the stem as an opening and closing function, to achieve the opening action of the pneumatic valve, mainly for the use of the cut-off valve, it can also be designed to have the function of regulation or section valve and regulation.
